Walnuts March 03, 2022

While we await the new shipment report from California, we see that the course of the walnut market has remained unchanged since the last shipment report.
Both origin as spot prices in Europe are still under pressure, as there seems to be sufficient material available and buyers are not in a hurry to cover.
In the meantime, the Chilean crop is getting closer, first price indications of the new crop have made their way into the market.
The premium which is asked for Chilean material might help to stop the freefall of prices of California walnuts, both on kernel as inshell bases.
It remains to be seen how different markets will react on the premium for Chilean material and how this will play out volume wise.
Right now California still has the benefit of having goods physically ready, but this benefit will vanish once the Chile crop becomes available.
