Looking back at our last report, the sentiment in the Californian walnut market didn’t change a lot during the last two weeks. The availability of halves is reported to be down due to the heavy rains which California witnessed by the end of October. At the same time this has resulted in more downwards pressure on the industrial grades, of which availability increased due to detestation of the quality of the walnuts which were stuck in the wet fields. The situation in Eastern-Europe remains unchanged, with more demand than physical supply options for urgent deliveries. Traditionally most buyers receive their merchandise latest by December to cover the needs for the holiday season and keep some stocks for the smaller needs in the months thereafter. Due to the late start and smaller volume of delivered product so far, the situation seems to be different this year. Several suppliers expect that demand will remain to be strong going into 2022 as well. It remains to be seen how this will play out, especially since availability of competitive industrial material from the US and China will increase in Europe as well.
