March was a good month for walnut shipments from California. During March total shipments were 76,946 tons, an increase of 24% compared to last year’s . With many products still in stock it is important that this trend continues in the coming months. This will allow the Californian market to prepare better for the 2021 harvest.
Chilean origin walnuts are in the middle of the Chandler harvest and all signs for a 150.000 mton crop are on green. At the moment, Chili is still asking a premium on the Chandler variety, as this particular variety is still very scarce from California. The expectations are that when Chili has processed more product, the prices will come closer to California. In the last few weeks, the market has stabilised a bit more, so there are good opportunities available in origin. Many sellers are trying to reduce their stock because the warm weather is coming.
We do not expect major shifts in the walnut market in the coming months. The only problem may be the availability on the spot stocks. Therefore we think it would be advisable to cover your needs for the coming period.
