Walnuts February 19, 2021

The interest for Californian walnuts remains strong. In recent weeks, many growers in California are reporting relatively advanced sold positions, especially for chandlers. The Inshell chandler variety is becoming scarce in supply for many growers. As a result, some packers pulled out of the market the last weeks. Which make it very hard to find any offer for chandlers from origin. This results in a price increase for the chandler variety of 21 percent. Many packers claimed that they are sold out for the chandlers variety for rest of the season, but this is hard to believe. For the moment, we only see this trend for the chandlers; the other grades have remained fairly stable in price and availability.
At the moment we still see the shipping problems from California. This makes the spot market in Europe very tight, and this trend is also reflected in the current prices. In comparison with other years the prices are very attractive. Therefore we think it would be advisable to cover your needs until the new harvest.
