15.03.2012 Pistachios
The pistachios market is relatively quiet here in Europe, which was also visible in the shipment figures of January. This was the opposite of what we have seen in many other markets and also the US domestic market. As such we can say that the pistachio industry seems to be in a relatively good shape with stable prices. Offers are getting scarcer as origin suppliers are very well sold. This is quite early, but it is not expected to have too much of an impact on the prices. For new crop the developments so far are good and a good crop can be expected.
27.10.2011 Pistachios
On October 14, 2011 the US pistachio crop receipts are as follows:
Open inshell 156.357 mton
Closed shell 38.201 mton
Shelling stock 7.474 mton
TOTAL 202.029 mton
As this number is a little bit disappointing, prices are firming a little bit to levels around USD 3.90/lbs. Fortunately for Europe the exchange rate is getting more attractive again and as such this price increase is not really seen. On kernels some demand is seen, but besides that the market remains slow in Europe. Offers for kernels and inshells are available upon request. We may have some very interesting opportunities for kernels.
30.09.2011 Pistachios
Some rumors of lower prices went through the market last week, but besides that information no real activity has been seen. Offers vary between USD 3.75-3.85/lbs basis FAS. We expect more activity during the Anuga which will be held from Saturday 8 October. Let’s wait and see.
8.09.2011 Pistachios
During the last week we have seen quite some activity. Supermarkets are asking for prices, but so far no real business was concluded. Prices decreased in the course of the week, which makes buyers reluctant to book already. Based on the size of the crop you would say that the downward potential is limited, but till date we have seen the opposite. For the moment is recommendable to follow this market closely. Offers are available upon request.

Iran: Stocks are limited and prices are stable. The market is currently waiting for the release of new crop prices, but so far this has not happened yet. We will keep you posted about the developments. US: Market continued to be quiet, but the release of the opening price by Paramount might result in some more activity. The price of USD 3.90/lbs is still considered as high by most customers. Especially when we take into account that prices came down to levels of USD 3.50/lbs earlier this year. Nonetheless Paramount sets the market and as long as they keep the prices at this level it is a matter of who holds their breath longest.

Iran: after a pretty difficult year for marketing Iranian pistachios we are looking forward to a new adventure, but will it be any different? Transferring money to and getting product from Iran will remain very difficult and it looks like we are heading for another challenging year. New crop is expected to be around 180.000 mton, which is slightly less compared to last year. First shipments will take place during the first half of October earliest and could be expected in the European market around end October/early November. The earlier the better as current stocks are limited. First indications are that new crop prices will be higher than last year and the reason given is the strong demand from evolving markets like China and Russia, but until now the farm gate prices haven’t been set yet so this is speculative, but not unlikely. As soon as we receive new crop prices we will inform you accordingly.
US: It has been quiet the past couple of weeks, but the shipment figures are showing quite strong months with especially Europe showing some strength. Germany is up by 200% compared to last year and also Spain shows a very strong shipment figures. Shipments in total are still behind the past year but the suppliers in origin are not interested in selling more of their merchandise as they need the carry over. Everybody is waiting for information about the new crop, which will be a little late. First shipments will most probably start early October. Opening prices will be in more or less the same range as last year and it may be recommendable to have a look at your position to cover some of your needs. New crop prices are available upon request.
1.07.2011 Pistachios
The pistachio market is currently very quiet. After the peak in shipments last month the prices moved up considerably and scared buyers away again. Sellers however are in a comfortable position as they are well sold and as such there is no need for them to take any action. Prices on the spot are already well above USD 4.00/lbs. As soon as more is known about the new crop we will let you know, but at the moment there is no real change in the market after the publication of the shipment figures.
19.05.2011 Pistachios
Last week the April shipment numbers were released. Domestic shipments are keeping the figures in quite good shape with just a slight decrease compared to last year (8.870.676 in 2011 versus 9.371.744 in 2010), but export is disappointing for the fourth month in a row and YTD 15% down compared to last year (155.256.182 in 2011 versus 182.979.950 in 2010). Western Europe and especially strong markets like Germany and Luxemburg have seen very slow shipments. China as expected entered the market again and therefore shipments to Asia picked up again. Prices have been fairly stable with a slight firmer undertone. No big changes are expected in the near future unless something dramatic happens with new crop, but so far this all looks in good shape.
8.04.2011 Pistachios
There are no real changes in the pistachio market compared to our last report. Prices on the supermarket shelves have been adjusted by January and consequently consumption has been affected quite a bit. This slowdown in demand keeps pressure on the prices. Current origin prices are more or less 10 cents down compared to last month at USD 3,50-3,55/lbs basis FAS. On top of that the first information we receive about the development of the new crop is very promising. As such our recommendation is to cover hand to mouth as prices might drop a little further. On the other hand any negative news on the crop can be a reason to increase prices again, especially with Paramount keeping prices quite a bit higher than their competition.
3.03.2011 Pistachios
The pistachio market has been weak for a couple of weeks in a row. Prices have come down to levels around 3,60/3,65 per lbs basis FAS and could drop further. This situation is making it a little bit difficult for traders as they took quite some position already at higher prices than we see today. Especially shipments to Germany have been firm compared to last year and this is also seen in the prices offered on the spot market. Overall shipments are down and especially the figure of China was an interesting one as they were a net exporter. Shipments of February are not expected to be much better and as such downward potential is still quite big. Here and there you see some interesting offers for nearby and therefore it is recommendable to book hand to mouth and work with bids. Offers are available upon request.
10.02.2011 Pistachios
The pistachio market is currently very quiet with prices moving more or less in the same range of 3.65-3.70/lbs basis FAS California. Prices from Iran are very firm and (almost) at par with California. This might influence demand for Iran product badly as many buyers buy Iran product out of a cost perspective. With regard to the Californian prices we are quite keen to see the shipment figures next week. Demand in Europe seems to be hit by the high prices and shipments to China most probably came down due to Chinese New Year. When shipment figures are disappointing prices are expected to come down further.
22.12.2010 Pistachios
During the past weeks there has been quite some activity on the spot market in Europe. A physical shortage of Iranian product was the main cause of this. Despite this, shipments from California have also been down to Western Europe by 33% for November (Spain -73%, Italy -18%, Germany -37%) and in total year to date by about 16%. While studying the shipment figures of California it seems they are not catching up for their late crop and are in total 11% behind last year. Do the high prices already have a slowing down effect on demand? The shipment figures of December will give us a better idea of were the market will go, but it seems there is some downward pressure. Price ideas at the moment are around USD 3.80/lbs for 21/25 on a FAS basis.
1.12.2010 Pistachios
Current stock position in Europe for Iran product is limited and is mainly caused by limited shipments from Iran caused by the embargo. Only particular steaming lines can ship to Europe, which is making it very hard. On top of that demand from China remains very strong and as it seems they are in the market for another 40.000 mton of product from Iran. This obviously keeps prices very firm, but the question is how long this situation will hold. Will demand remain strong? Our recommendation is to cover your needs for the first three months of next year and partially cover till September when back to back contracts can be made. Prices in our opinion have more potential to decrease in the long term. For pistachiokernels prices are not expected to increase due to the high percentage of closed shells. For this item we recommend to cover only hand to mouth.
31.03.2010 Pistachios
Pistachios are currently only bought hand to mouth and this will hold at least for this week. Iran is currently not offering as they are celebrating new year. From the US it is also getting more and more difficult to find product. Prices are around USD 5.30/lbs FAS and it is expected that this market will remain firm.
16.02.2010 Pistachios
Pistachio prices continue to rise and it seems that we are heading for a shortage. Paramount announced higher prices again and as they are the main factor in this market the rest follows. The trend is expected to stay firm as product is scarce. Therefore it might be recommendable to cover your needs although a dip in interest might show some special opportunities, but this is not really expected. All in all a bullish market where nobody knows where it will stop.
28.01.2010 Pistachios
Pistachios remain very difficult and the expectation is that this difficult situation will continue for the months ahead. Iran had 150.000 mton of product available. 80.000 mton has been exported and 30.000 mton has been used domestically. This means that we will only have another 40.000 mton unsold until November. This is a very tight situation and it is our recommendation to cover your needs. The situation on US pistachios is comparable. Due to big promotions in the US and Europe consumption has grown leaving them with a tight situation as well. Prices are going up every week and especially when you take into consideration that this is an on-year crop these firm prices will most probably hold.
8.01.2010 Pistachios
Promotional activities in the USA and Germany have increased demand quite a bit. In USA alone demand grew by 25%. Besides this increase also China has bought quite some volume at times when prices were considerably lower than they are today. Paramount increased their prices at the beginning of the week to USD 3.95/lbs basis FAS, which is pushing the market up. Prices paid in the home market are currently better than the prices in the export markets. Bearing this in mind the pistachios market might become quite difficult, but depends a lot on whether consumption will remain strong. This situation is having an impact on the Iranian prices as well. Prices are firming and it might be recommendable to have a look at your needs for later positions. Prices are available upon request.
27.11.2009 Pistachios
USA: The crop in USA is forecasted around 350-360 million lbs. This is significantly lower than earlier estimated
Iran: The Iranian crop will be between 150-170.000 mton which is significantly less than the earlier forecast of at least 200-220.000 mton. Because of the disappointing crops, prices are going up. Buyers became aware of those disappointing crops and start covering pushing prices up even more. In the last couple of days we say prices stabilize more or less but at relatively high prices.
30.10.2009 Pistachios
The market of Iranian Pistachios has been fairly active over the past couple of days. Reason for the activity was disappointing news from Iran on the size of their crop. Whereas a crop of 190.000-200.000 mton was expected earlier this estimate was downgraded to only 160.000 mton. This in combination with the very small crop of only 85.000 mton of last year and increasing demand from China, India and Russia this year might become very difficult. Prices are going up and also prices of the US Pistachios have been increased. Due to the above news it might be advisable to take some coverage. Prices are compared with last year still reasonable in Euro terms.
27.07.2009 Pistachios
USA: Although export figures and domestic demand is down, not much is happening with the prices. Due to the limited availability and carry over, prices are stable and not expected to come down before new crop (shipment October) will become available. New crop is expected to be comparable to the 2007 crop, around 400-450 million lbs. Current price idea for USA Pistachios 21/25 is Usd 3,30-3,35 per lbs basis FAS California.
Iran : 2008 crop availability is very scarce and prices are very high. Current price levels for 28/30 are well over
Euro 6,00 per kg basis FCA Europe. The Iranian exporters are hesitant to ship to Europe because of the Aflatoxine regulation which are very strict. It is better for them than to avoid risk and ship to other destinations.
2008 crop was 80.000-100.000 mton with a carry in from 2007 of approx. 50.000 mton. The 2009 crop (available for shipment 2nd half October/November) is forecasted at 170.000-180.000 mton.
15.07.2009 Pistachios
Due to a damaged crop in Iran and limited availability from USA, prices for pistachio's are very high. As stocks in Europe are very small, which we expect to continue for another 3-4 months at least, prices will stay high for some time. Hopefully the new crop from Iran (October shipment) and USA will give some relief towards the end of the year. Recommendation is to cover hand to mouth on the one hand but on the other hand make sure that one will have product and not find the market being sold out.
23.04.2009 Pistachios
Due to the problems on Salmonella found in US pistachio’s, prices were firming. But even with higher prices it is hard to get an offer at the moment as US packers are very busy supplying the supermarkets in US where product was re-called from. It is difficult to forecast the impact at the moment but with the short crop in Iran and the problems in the US, prices for Pistachio’s were going up and might increase even more in the months ahead.
Prices from Iran are going up. As sellers can sell their product easily they do not care too much on purchasing conditions and just setting their rules (buy FOB and no Aflatoxine restrictions/conditions). Importers and traders are pushed to take the risk and although the risk is lower as the small crop has given more time to the grower/packer to take care and dry the product properly, it is quite a big risk.
Current price ideas are: Iranian Pistachio’s 28/30 raw at Euro 6050 per mton
USA Pistachio’s 21/25 raw at Usd 3,25-3,30 per lbs
