The regular visit to Turkey to get an idea of the crop is getting close again. The first news received from the growing areas was that blossoming was good, but this was followed last week by some reports about frost, which has caused some damage. It is too early to say anything about the extent of the damage, but when more becomes known we will inform you accordingly.

The Turkish apricot crop is not looking good. In addition to earlier reports we are now getting confirmation that the crop in Malatya is heavily hit by rains and hail in June causing a higher percentage of speckled fruits. The current numbers reported out of Turkey are indicating a crop around 70.000 mton with almost 10-15% speckled fruits. In our report you can find that this number is not sufficient to fill in demand. Growers and traders are aware of this and sitting on their stocks awaiting higher prices. It is not expected that prices will ease much, probably just move on the exchange rates, unless demand should disappear! As Ramadan is starting this week, business most probably will slow down.

Jaap has prepared our annual apricot report. Unfortunately due to close of airspace he has not been able to do the survey in person but we trust that with the information received we have a very useful and interesting apricot report. The report is available on call.

After a steep increase in prices two weeks ago as a result of a frost period in the Malatya area prices have eased a bit again. Origin isn’t giving any feedback on this price trend, but one could imagine that the stock position is still reasonably good. Next week we will visit Malatya again for our annual apricot survey. This special report will only be distributed upon request and obviously to our regular customers for this item. Therefore we kindly ask you to inform us whether you are interested to receive our report and inform on what grades we could be of assistance.

Last week the market was for apricots was very difficult due to the frost period hitting the main growing areas. The real extent of the damage is very hard to judge and will be examined during our visit which will most probably take place during week 16 (w.c. April 19, 2010). At the moment prices are very firm and reaching levels around USD 5.000/mton. Offers are available upon request.

NEWSFLASH It looks like the Turkish Apricot industry is heading for an interesting year. As written in our market report earlier this week blossoming has taken place in the lower areas, which is not without risk. Unfortunately the last couple of days severe frost has hit the main growing areas around Malatya. Malatya itself recorded temperatures of -2.6C, Akcadag -3C, Dogansehir -4C, Darende -6C and Baskil -8C. This might have quite an impact on the crop, but the real extent of the damage will become a bit clearer after the weekend when better weather is expected. We will keep you posted.

Due to warm weather blooming has started in the lower areas in Malatya. This is not without risk as during the nights the temperature drops below freezing point. At the moment it is very early to make some predictions, but we will visit Malatya again by the end April when the risk of frost is limited. The higher regions are not flowering yet and as such the current risk only counts for the lower areas and the question is a bit how much of the trees is flowering already.

The summer days are over and it seems that the market of apricots is getting more active every day. Interest in the first months has been slow, but now it seems that still some covering needs to be done which is reflected in the demand for October shipments. Prices as such are also moving upwards and are expected to stay firm. Quality is an issue due to the bad weather conditions. Todays prices for #2 are around USD 3150 per mton and #4 is traded around USD 2950 per mton. If interested please let us know and we will make you our firm offers.

After our field trip two weeks ago we are surprised by the information that is flowing into the market about a decent crop of above 100.000 mton. We went into the field and this is not what we have seen. Our expectation is still that it will be considerably down. Most areas showed very little product due to frost damage and this concerned the main growing areas. Other areas showed a reasonable crop, but this was mainly in the higher areas which only account for a small part of the total crop. Our recommendation is to take at least partial cover to be sure of supply. Especially first shipments need to be covered as Ramadan will be early this year and take quite some product out of the market. Current prices are quite attractive and available upon request.
